MFG reacts following Manchester city centre blaze

In light of recent events in Manchester, the message is simple but urgent: fire safety cannot be taken for granted.

While we won’t dwell on the details of what happened, it serves as a stark reminder to the industry - especially those responsible for buildings near high-traffic infrastructure - that passive fire protection (PFP) isn’t a box-ticking exercise. It’s the foundation of building safety.

At MFG Construction, we understand that fire doesn’t wait for the paperwork to catch up.

That’s why we’ve built a dedicated Passive Fire Protection division, delivering real-world safety across commercial, residential, education, and infrastructure sites.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Articles 8 and 17 place legal responsibility on the 'Responsible Person' to ensure fire precautions are in place, functioning, and maintained over time.

That includes:

  • Fire doors — installed, inspected, and maintained

  • Fire-stopping and compartmentation — surveyed and up to spec

  • Clear, documented evidence that your building is safe — not just assumed to be

  • This isn’t theory. These are obligations — and more importantly, lives — at stake.

Mike Barker, Director at MFG, said: "Our Passive Fire Protection team is built for real-world delivery. We bring expertise, accreditation, and the kind of site experience that keeps your building compliant and your people safe."

  • Our services include:

  • Fire door inspections and maintenance

  • Installation of compliant fire-rated doors and glazing systems

  • Compartmentation surveys and remediation works

  • Specialist fire-stopping across risers, voids, and service penetrations

We work closely with facilities managers, developers, education bodies, housing providers and contractors to integrate protection into the fabric of your building and not just during construction, but long after.

 Do you know . . .

  • When were your fire doors last inspected?

  • Is your compartmentation still intact after refurbishment or retrofitting?

  • Are your records ready for a Fire Risk Assessment or audit?

  • If you hesitate to answer, you're not alone — but now’s the time to act.

Reach out to our team to book a survey, get advice, or discuss a full compliance plan tailored to your site.
