New apprentice is making his mark

At MFG, we believe in building more than just projects — we train up people who want to enter the construction sector.
Our apprentices are the future of the industry, and we’re committed to giving them the skills, confidence, and real-world experience they need to succeed.
Our newest apprentice, 19-year-old Rhys Midgley is the perfect example. After completing his Level 1, 2, and 3 plumbing qualifications at St Helens College, Rhys joined MFG to take the next step - turning classroom learning into site-ready expertise.
From day one, Rhys has been working alongside Mike Edwards, one of MFG’s most experienced plumbing and heating engineers. Mike is more than just a supervisor to Rhys - he’s a mentor, passing on the ‘hidden secrets’ of the trade that no textbook can teach.
“I’m with Mike all the time,” says Rhys.
“He’ll show me how it’s done, then let me get on with it. I’m getting proper hands-on experience — not just watching from the sidelines.”
That hands-on approach is paying off.
In just two months, Rhys has already worked on major projects, from replacing over a hundred urinals at a Coventry college to installing complete bathroom facilities, including toilets, basins, and accessible units.
Today, when we caught up with him, he was working with the team on a job in Swissport in Runcorn.
For Rhys, plumbing wasn’t a family tradition — it was a conscious choice that he made after leaving education.
“When I left school, I wasn’t sure what to do,” he says.
“My family suggested learning a trade because you’ll always have work. And they’re right — you’ll never stop needing plumbers.”
Stephen Price, Projects Director at MFG, said Rhys is a prime example of a employee is keen and willing to lean from experienced tradesmen.
He said: “We’re proud to give apprentices like Rhys a place to learn, grow, and contribute. By pairing them with expert tradespeople, we make sure they leave with more than just qualifications they leave with the confidence, problem-solving skills, and practical know-how that define a true professional.”
Rhys’s journey is just beginning, but he’s already proving that with the right training, mentorship, and determination, the next generation of tradespeople is in safe hands.
