Roofing job delights national regulator

MFG Construction has successfully completed a comprehensive roofing and structural remediation project at Harpur Hill, working in partnership with Mitie and a national regulator.

What began as a targeted repair job quickly expanded into a major refurbishment project following the exceptional quality of the team's initial work.

The project, originally scoped as a single-section repair, evolved into a comprehensive roof overhaul using a high-performance three-layer Sika system across an area measuring over 24 metres deep and 15 metres wide.

The client had originally enlisted the help of a number of alternative construction companies to solve a problematic leak at the £56m building in Derbyshire that is regarded as the most comprehensive facility in the world dedicated to the investigation and research of health and safety science.

Led by experienced roofer and MFG Site Manager Alan Clegg, he and his team worked systematically to address multiple leaking sections that had been temporarily patched for nearly a decade, replacing them with long-term waterproofing solutions.

"This project really showcased what our team can achieve when given the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities," said Alan.

"What started as a routine repair became something much more significant. The client's team quickly recognised the quality of our work and our ability to solve complex problems, which is incredibly rewarding for the whole crew.

"This has allowed us to show our skillset and utilise the 45 years plus experience we have on the job and one project has led to another and now we're regarded as an extension of the team and when you look at the calibre of people in this world class facility – it makes you proud to have delivered alongside them."

The project presented several logistical challenges, including working around existing scaffold infrastructure from other contractors, managing aged materials, and coordinating multiple phases of work.

Despite these constraints, the MFG team delivered a solution that exceeded expectations both technically and aesthetically.

The remediation process involved deep cleaning and surface preparation, followed by embedment coat application and full layering with sanding to achieve a clean finish. The team then applied a final seal over all repaired areas using the specialist Sika Pro System.
