Stockport Station Maintenance with MFG & Mitie

At MFG Construction, our history is built on decades of rail work across the UK — and projects like this one at Stockport Railway Station show why expertise, teamwork, and safety remain at the heart of what we do.

Working for our longstanding partner and client Mitie, our team has been delivering a short six-week programme of works to transform and upgrade stairways at the busy live station.

The job has involved stripping back worn and damaged steps, repairing, and refitting new nosings and coverings to ensure compliance, safety, and durability for the thousands of passengers passing through each day.

Overseeing the works is Rob Goulding, one of our most experienced joiners. Rob started his career as a young apprentice and has spent decades working up and down the country on major projects.

Now, a couple of years away from retirement, Rob continues to bring the kind of knowledge and practical skill to the team that other companies similar to us don’t have at their disposal.

Rob has been with MFG for more than 16 years, and his steady hand ensures the highest standards are maintained on site.

Supporting him are one of our apprentices and a labourer, giving younger members of the workforce the chance to learn directly from someone who has lived and breathed the trade.

Rob Goulding, Joiner, said:

“I started out as an apprentice myself, so it feels right to now be working with the next generation on jobs like this. Rail stations bring unique challenges — you’re working in a live environment with people moving through all the time. The key is keeping everything safe, compliant, and efficient, and that’s what we’ve delivered here.”

Working in a live station environment means health and safety has been the top priority throughout. The team has operated with full Heras panels, cordoned off site areas, safety signage, full PPE, and daily progress reports to keep everything on track and transparent.

Stephen Price, Projects Director at MFG, said:

“Having someone with Rob’s level of experience overseeing this programme of works is invaluable. It’s tough work replacing materials and hitting a very tight programme, but it’s about managing safety, compliance, and quality in a live station environment. This is where MFG’s history in rail really shines through. We’re proud of the transformation our team has delivered and the way they’ve mentored apprentices along the way.”

The transformation (as our pictures above show) has been clear to see — from damaged and tired stairways to safe, compliant, and smart-looking access routes that will serve passengers for years to come.

At MFG, we take pride not only in the projects we deliver, but also in the people who deliver them. With expertise like Rob’s guiding the way, and apprentices learning at every stage, the future of skilled construction in rail looks bright.
