MFG Passive Fire backs Fire Door Safety Week with five-step check

MFG Passive Fire Protection North-West is marking Fire Door Safety Week by urging building owners and managers to run the campaign's five-step fire door check.

A fire door is built to hold back flames and smoke long enough for people to get out. It can only do that if every part of it works.

The five steps are:

1. Certification. Is there a label or plug on the door, and a certificate to back it up?

2. Apertures. Is any glazing intact, and is it the right type for a fire door?

3. Gaps and seals. Are the gaps even, and are the seals in place and undamaged?

4. Closers. Does the door pull itself shut and latch every time?

5. Operation. Does it swing freely, and is nobody wedging it open?

The simplest test takes seconds. Open the door, let go and watch what it does.
