Project Overview

Emergency Repair Works Completed at Preston Railway Station

MFG Construction has successfully completed restoration works at Preston Railway Station in Lancashire following a vehicular incident that caused significant damage to the building.

When there’s essential work in the Rail sector, we get the call – just like we did here.

The Incident

Unfortunately, a member of the public driving a new vehicle lost control, leaving the roadway and colliding with the side of Preston Station. The vehicle mounted the pavement and crashed through a high-glazed window, causing substantial damage both internally and externally to the building.

The internal space housed a bicycle shop, which had to be temporarily relocated during the repair works.

The Project
MFG Construction was appointed by our client, Avanti West Coast, to rectify the damage and restore the station to its original condition.

Project Delivery

The works were completed in just two weeks, with the team working efficiently to minimise disruption to station operations. The project was managed on-site with a small, dedicated team working safely and professionally throughout.
Safety measures were implemented during the works, with appropriate signage directing pedestrians through alternative routes to ensure public safety.

Site Foreman Dave Howard said:

“I’ve been with MFG for 12 years, and jobs like this are what we do best - responding quickly, working safely, and delivering quality results. This was a team effort from start to finish. Nick Duff, Andre Lee-Fox and Graham Heyes were brilliant throughout the week, and we had great support from our glazing specialists. We worked efficiently, kept disruption to a minimum, and delivered exactly what the client needed. We had the station back to normal in a matter of days, with new protective bollards in place to prevent future incidents. It’s hands-on work, and that’s what I’ve always enjoyed about this job. The bollards are in, the building’s restored, and Preston Station is back to business.”

The project was handed over to the client for final inspection last week (November 14), with all works completed to specification and the station restored to full operational status.

What we said

Mike Barker, Operations Director at MFG, said: “Full credit to the team for the first class job that they have done here. As you can see from the images of the scene following the vehicle collision into the building, this side of Preston Rail Station was significantly damaged. However, we responded quickly after getting the call from our client and the job looks great. You wouldn’t even know there had been an issue.”

Project Highlights

  • Complete window replacement and new frame installation

  • Internal and external structural repairs with zinc panelling on the outside building

  • Professional repainting and finishing

  • Installation of 16 protective bollards from the corner to prevent future incidents
