We delivered a new two-layer felt roof at Blackpool North

Project Overview

MFG Construction was appointed by Mitie to install a new two-layer felt roof system at Blackpool North railway station. The station has been in operation since 1974, and MFG has periodically delivered improvement works at the site for over 20 years.

The project required careful preparation, technical precision, and adherence to specification to ensure a watertight finish across both the main and smaller roof structures. The works formed part of an essential maintenance programme to enhance building performance and extend roof longevity in a coastal environment.

Project Highlights

The project involved complete renewal of the existing roof coverings, with extensive preparatory and remedial works carried out before the new felt system was installed.

All roof areas were cleared of debris, dried, and primed to create a suitable surface for felt application

Uneven roof sections were levelled using plywood sheeting to establish an even substrate and ensure proper bonding of the new felt layers.

On the smaller roof, which exhibited structural bowing and pooling, new OSB and plywood boards were installed to reduce sagging and improve drainage

A base layer of felt was then applied across all prepared areas on both roofs using gas torching welds to achieve full adhesion.

All lap joints were checked to confirm full adhesion and sealing, flashings and terminations were secured, and leaf guards were refitted

Delivery & Outcome

The project was delivered safely and to specification, with clear communication maintained throughout. The installation was completed in accordance with quality requirements to provide a durable roofing solution suited to coastal conditions.

Result

The completed two-layer felt roof system has improved the weatherproofing, durability, and performance of the building at Blackpool North.
